Prequel ~ Life before my new role of Mommy

Wanting to be a "mom" wasn't something that came easy. I've got to say, had I known the road I would have to travel, I may have made different choices, or started earlier.

My husband and I decided we'd try to get pregnant even before we were married. My age (36 at the time) was a factor. We were completely unaware of where that road would take us.

After trying for about a year, we enlisted the assistance of my gynecologist. He advised that since we had been trying for that length of time, we should probably consult with a fertility specialist. That doctor suggested taking an oral fertility drug, chlomid, and I became pregnant. I was so excited, I couldn't help but shout it to the world. Unfortuantely, my excitement was replaced with fear. It was October, right before our annual Halloween Party, that I found out the pregnancy was ectopic. After an emergency D&C, a couple shots of methotrexate, and a couple months off, we were ready to try again. Our specialist at the time saw no reason to change the course of action, did some more tests, and told us to proceed as usual - the natural way.

Well, after a couple more months, we became pregnant again. This time, I was less than ready to shout it to the world and proceeded with caution. Again, another ectopic. More shots of methotrexate and a feeling of emptiness.

I decided to change specialists and found out from him, after my records were reviewed, that my chances of more ectopic pregnancies was significantly high if we tried to conceive naturally and my only option was in vitro fertilization (IVF). It was scary and costly, but it was the only opportunity we had for becoming parents. That old saying - "if at first you don't succeed, try, try, again" - was getting kind of old. We tried, and tried and our final try, started on 9/11/2001. After that, we did become pregnant, by IVF, but 8 weeks in, miscarried. It was heart-wrenching. All-in-all, I think we went through 5 or 6 rounds of IVF. The shots, the cost, the emotional roller coaster.... It was time for a break.

I thought I'd be able to take a break and do it again, but, after two years (and being 43), my husband and I decided that our life was complete without children. We had a wonderful niece and nephew who we adored and who spent a great deal of time with us (sort of surrogate children). We thought it would be better to concentrate our efforts there. That decision was in the summer of 2003. Little did we know, our prayers were going to be answered.

One cool fall morning, I received a call from a relative who talked about a sibling's pregnancy and decision to go the adoption route. Knowing our situation, she asked us if we would consider being the adoptive parents to this child. It was at that moment that I knew there was a plan for us all along. The road to parenthood just began......
